Australia land of opportunity? Over 6.5 million immigrants to Australia in the past 60 years cannot be wrong.

Australia is a vast and beautiful continent with over 7.7 million square kilometres of land on which live a mere 21.5 million people of which getting close to one-quarter are immigrants. It is the word's smallest continent but sixth-largest country. English is the dominant language.

Australia is divided into six States Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania (an island State to the south of the mainland) - and two Territories Australian Capital Territory (seat of the Commonwealth parliament) and the Northern Territory. New South Wales with a little over 800,000 square kilometres of land has the largest population of almost 7 million people whilst the Northern Territory with a land area of approximately1.3 million square kilometres has the smallest population of approximately 211,000 people.

The vast bulk of the Australian population resides in the eastern seaboard States of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

Australia boasts spectacular and diverse scenery ranging from world class coral reefs to rainforests to old growth forests in Tasmania to gorges in the Northern Territory to amazing white sand beaches along the coastlines and to the vast arid areas running through central Australia to the west coast. Large tracts of land in Australia are heritage listed as is the Great Barrier Reef. Far North Queensland is the only place in the world where two world heritage areas - the Daintree National Park and the Great Barrier Reef meet.

Australia enjoys world class education, health and child care facilities which are accessible to most of the population regardless of social standing.

Australia has a strong economy with its ongoing political and social stability resulting in strong foreign investment. It is culturally diverse - a direct result of the more than 6.5 million immigrants who have settled in Australia. Accordingly, the cultural, arts, musical and food scenes are vibrant and diverse.
